Just a decade ago, after hearing the words “You have ALS,” a person with Lou Gehrig’s Disease in Louisiana or Mississippi had nowhere to turn. Upon receiving the diagnosis of this fatal disease, persons with ALS were expected to simply go home and get their affairs in order. The endeavor to organize a local chapter of The ALS Association began in Baton Rouge, La., in 2001 with an all-volunteer effort and the goal of offering help and hope for families affected by ALS in the area. The ALS Association Louisiana Chapter was founded in 2005 and expanded to include the state of Mississippi in 2009. The ALS Association Louisiana-Mississippi Chapter’s programs are designed to fill in the gaps not met by the healthcare community, health insurance and government assistance. The chapter’s services include assistance with healthcare navigation; support groups for pALS and their caregivers; a durable medical equipment and assistive technology loan closet; a multidisciplinary clinic; outreach to identify new patients; education and awareness; and advocacy efforts on a state and national level. The ALS Association is the only organization in Louisiana and Mississippi providing all of these programs.
Philadelphia Phillies All-Star pitcher, Aaron Nola, and Yuengling, America’s Oldest Brewery, are proud to launch Cheers PA, a virtual fundraiser benefitting the Hospitality Assistance Response of Pennsylvania (HARP) and the hundreds and thousands of Pennsylvania bar and restaurant workers who have lost their jobs and incomes due to COVID-19. With deep connections to PA, Yuengling and Aaron Nola have rallied Pennsylvania legends - from athletes to influencers - to come together to raise funds for HARP. Through HARP, 100% of donations received will benefit impacted PA hospitality workers - bartenders and wait staff - with immediate emergency funding to help them through this difficult time.
Pennsylvania's hospitality industry is being hit hard by the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic. PRLA is sourcing information on relief efforts for the hospitality industry that are happening across the commonwealth in response to this crisis. Please share resources or efforts that you're aware of so we can spread the word.
By 2020, it is estimated that 65% of U.S. jobs will require some form of postsecondary education. Further, postsecondary education is also increasingly the only route to upward mobility. The lowest-income Americans who obtain a college degree are five times more likely than their peers to escape poverty.
