John Wolford

BIOGRAPHY

John Wolford was born on October 16th, 1995, in Dallas, Texas. He plays quarterback in the NFL. 

In his early years, Walford attended Bishop Kenny High School where he was an honorable mention selection to the Parade All-America team and was named the Florida Times-Union's Offensive Player of the Year in 2013. As a senior, he threw for 3,317 yards and 38 touchdowns and just seven interceptions while rushing for 931 yards and 14 touchdowns, completing 197 of 284 pass attempts. He was a First-team all-state in Florida's Class 5A and he threw for a state-record 126 touchdowns. He helped Bishop Kenny to a 10-0 record in 2011, the Class 5A Regional Finals in 2012 and a 10-1 record and the regional semifinals in 2013. 

After he finished high school, Wolford committed to the University of Wake Forest where as a freshman in 2014, he started all 12 games, becoming the first player in school history to do so. He completed 214 of 367 pass attempts for 2,037 yards and 12 touchdowns and set school records for most attempts, completions, yards, touchdown passes and completion percentage by a true freshman QB. Wolford posted more wins as a true freshman QB than any other player and he finished eighth in the ACC in average passing yards per game at 169.8. As a sophomore in 2015, Wolford ranks among the top 10 in school history in career completions with 356, completion percentage with 59.3%, passing efficiency with 116.14 and is 13th in school history in career passing yards with 3,828. His 696 yards passing in the first two games of the season marked the best start ever by a Demon Deacon. He became the first Wake Forest passer with back-to-back 300-yard games since Riley Skinner in 2009. He was also named to the Academic All-ACC team and he surpassed the 3,000-yard mark in career passing yards in his 18th career game making him the third-fastest to that milestone.

As a junior in 2016, Wolford started 11 games and appeared in 12 contests, finishing third on the team with 521 rushing yards, third-most rushing yards in a season by a Wake Forest QB. He was an Academic All-ACC selection. In his senior year in 2017, Wolford was a team captain and a Second-Team All-ACC. He was a Two-time CFPA National Player of the Week on October 28th and November 11th, a Two-time ACC Offensive Back of the Week on October 28th and November 11th, and was a Two-time Peyton Manning Star of the Week on October 28th and Nov. 11th. He was also named a Davey O’Brien “Great 8” honoree and named ACC Player of the Week by Athlon Sports, for his effort against the Louisville on October 28th, finishing the game 28-of-34 for a career-high 461 yards and six total touchdowns. In the process, Wolford tied the program record for touchdown passes in a game with 5 and for total touchdowns with 6. 

After he graduated from college, Wolford entered the 2018 NFL Draft where he signed with the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent. He played in most of the preseason finale against the Philadelphia Eagles, completing 8 passes on 20 attempts for 89 yards and an interception but was cut from the Jets on September 4th. In the 2019 AAF QB Draft, the Arizona Hotshots drafted Wolford with their second-round pick. Wolford was named starter prior to the regular season. In Week 1 against Salt Lake Stallions, Wolford completed 18 of 29 passes for 275 yards, four touchdowns, and two two-point conversions and was named Week 1 AAF Offensive Player of the Week. He earned a second Player of the Week award in Week 7 when he completed 15 of 19 passes for 212 yards, two touchdowns, one interception, and a 126.3 passer rating and ran for a 35-yard touchdown in a 32–15 victory against the San Diego Fleet. On April 10, 2019, Wolford signed with the Los Angeles Rams of the NFL after the AAF suspended operations. He was waived during final roster cuts on August 31, 2019, but was signed the next day to the Rams practice squad.
