M.J. Stewart

BIOGRAPHY

Marvin Stewart Jr. was born on September 16, 1995, in Arlington, Virginia. He is a cornerback in the National Football League.

At Yorktown High School, he played in the Chesapeake Bowl in Virginia Beach, Va. Stewart was ranked the No. 28 cornerback in the country and the No. 13 player in Virginia by Rivals.com, he was considered the No. 36 safety in the nation by 247sports.com. Marvin played a variety of positions at Yorktown, including running back, wide receiver, safety and cornerback. He ran for 1,428 yards and 24 touchdowns as a senior. He was twice named first-team All-Met by The Washington Post, and earned his conference's offensive player of the year as a junior and also picked up All-Northeast Region and all-district honors. Stewart piled up 1,842 yards rushing, 323 receiving and 32 total touchdowns on offense as a junior, defensively, he had 77 tackles, 10 interceptions (returned one for a touchdown) and returned three punts for scores. He had six interceptions and returned two for scores as a sophomore.

Starting college on 2014, during his true freshman season, Stewart appeared in 12 games and finished with 26 tackles (14 solo), four pass breakups, two interceptions and 0.5 tackles for loss. Participated in the Quick Lane Bowl By 2015 on his sophomore season, he was named to the All-ACC second team by ACSMA, tied for the ACC lead with 18 passes defended and also tied with teammate Des Lawrence for second in the league with 14 pass breakups. He finished with 62 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, one sack, one forced fumble and four interceptions. Stewart posted a career-high 12 tackles (six solo) and had a pass breakup in the ACC Championship Game against Clemson Stewart earned coaches' defensive player of the week honors for his performance against Illinois. He finished with five tackles, two pass breakups and his fourth career interception against the Illini, recorded his third career interception in the win over NC A&T. Starting at cornerback, Marvin finished with five tackles, a forced fumble and a pass breakup in the season opener against South Carolina.

On his junior season, on 2016, he earned honorable mention at All-ACC by ACSMA. He has a combined for 25 pass breakups over the last two seasons (11 in 2016, 14 in 2015). Marvin ranked sixth on the team with 66 tackles, also had a team-high 11 pass breakups, a team-best two forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries and had 29 career pass breakups, which ranks third all-time at UNC.  On his last season on 2017, he picked up honorable mention All-ACC honors for the second straight season. Stewart started all 12 games and tallied 45 tackles, 5.0 tackles for loss, two sacks, two quarterback hurries and 12 pass breakups. He also returned 15 punts for 170 yards, an average of 11.3 yards per return. He had his most productive return game of the year, returning four punts for 63 yards with a long of 41 and took over the UNC career record with 41 career pass breakups, breaking the mark of 40 set by Robert Williams (1995-97). Stewart played his best game of the season against Duke, tallying two solo tackles, a sack and three pass breakups.

On May 10, 2018, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed Stewart to a four-year, $5.08 million contract. He made his professional regular season debut in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ season-opener at the New Orleans Saints and recorded four solo tackles during their 48-40 victory. The following week, he earned his first career start after Vernon Hargreaves sustained a shoulder injury the previous week and was placed on injured reserve. Stewart finished the Buccaneers’ 27-21 win against the Philadelphia Eagles with five combined tackles. In a Week 3, Stewart collected a season-high nine solo tackles and broke up a pass attempt during a 30-27 loss against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Stewart was inactive for five games (Weeks 9-13) after injuring his foot. Stewart lost his role as a starting cornerback to Ryan Smith during his absence and remained a backup for the last four games of the season. Stewart finished his rookie season in 2018 with 33 combined tackles (31 solo) and three pass deflections in 11 games and five starts.

Stewart signed with the Houston Texans in 2023.
