Steven Sims

BIOGRAPHY

Steven Sims Jr. was born on March 31st, 1997, in Houston, Texas. He is a wide receiver and return specialist in the NFL.

In his early years, Sims Jr. attended Travis High School where he earned a three-star rating by ESPN and a two-star ranking from Rivals and 247Sports.com. He made 26 catches for 427 yards and five touchdowns in 2012 and caught 47 passes for 690 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2013. Sims Jr. completed his senior season at Travis HS with 64 receptions for 923 yards and 14 scores while also rushing 28 times for 214 yards, adding five touchdowns, earning first-team all-district honors. He was also named a finalist for the Houston Touchdown Club Offensive Player of the Year. 

After he finished high school, Sims Jr. committed to the University of Kansas where as a freshman in 2015, he played in 11 games, starting six contests and caught a team second-best 30 passes for 349 yards and two scores. He caught at least one pass in every game he played and totaled a career-best six receptions at TCU. He also scored touchdowns against Baylor and Oklahoma State and caught two passes for a career-high 58 yards against K-State. Sims Jr. made his collegiate debut with a start at wide receiver, posting three catches for 15 yards against South Dakota State and caught his first-career touchdown on a 36-yard pass against Baylor. As a sophomore in 2016, Sims Jr. played a pivotal role in all 12 games, starting 11 contests at wide receiver. He was near the top of the Big 12 Conference in nearly every receiving category. Sims Jr. caught 72 passes for 859 yards and 7 touchdowns. He was listed ninth on KU’s single-season receiving yardage list, ranked fifth for receptions in a season and eclipsed 100 yards receiving on four occasions. He also caught more than five passes in nine games and ranked fourth in the Big 12 with 6.0 receptions-per-game. Sims Jr. caught 61 passes for 606 yards and three touchdowns during Big 12 play, totaled a career-high nine catches for 124 yards at West Virginia, notched 124 yards receiving against Rhode Island and completed his lone pass attempt of the season for a 40-yard gain at West Virginia. As a junior in 2017, Sims Jr. played in all 12 games, starting eight at wide receiver and led KU in both receptions with 59 and receiving yards with 839. He also scored six receiving touchdowns, averaging a career-best 14.2 yards per catch, and ranked seventh in the Big 12 in receptions and 10th in receiving yards per game. His 233 receiving yards were the most for a Jayhawk since Dezmon Briscoe recorded 242 yards against Missouri in 2009, and his 233-yard game is the third-most in Kansas single-game history. Sims Jr. also returned 12 punt returns averaging 6.4 yards per return and returned 14 kickoffs, averaging 25.7 yards per return. In his senior season in 2018, Sims Jr. started at wide receiver in the season-opener where he caught four passes for 29 yards and a touchdown against Nicholls and finished the season against Texas where he caught five balls for 13 yards in his last game as a Jayhawk. 

After he graduated from college, Sims Jr. entered the 2019 NFL Draft where he was signed by the Washington Redskins as an undrafted free agent on April 30th, 2019. After having a strong camp performance, Sims made the final roster cuts on August 31st, 2019, beating out fellow wide receivers, Cam Sims, Brian Quick, Jehu Chesson, and the Washington Redskins 2016 first-rounder Josh Doctson. He had his first career reception, a three-yard gain from QB Case Keenum, in a Week 2 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, along with three carries for sixteen yards and had his first career touchdown, a 65-yard rushing touchdown, against the New England Patriots on October 6th, 2019.
