Steven Wirtel

BIOGRAPHY

Steven Wirtel was born on Oct. 3, 1997 in Orland Park, Illinois. He is a long snapper for the Los Angeles Rams in the NFL.

As a junior at Mount Carmel High School, Wirtel was 38-of-38 on punt, 54-of-54 on FG and 92-of-92 on PAT snaps. He was named a first-team all-state as a specialist from multiple outlets and earned all-conference honors by the Chicago Sun Times. He also caught 25 passes for 290 yards and four TDs. As a senior, he was 36-of-36 on punt, 58-of-58 on FG and 94-of-94 on PAT snaps. Wirtel was considered a three-star recruit by Scout. He was considered one of the best long snappers in the class of 2016, ranking sixth by Kohl’s Kicking. In his final two high school seasons, he was perfect on all of his snaps (372/372). Wirtel eventually chose Iowa State over Illinois and Georgia.

Wirtel's freshman year at Iowa State he was named the Dury Moss Outstanding Co-Newcomer of the Year, Big 12 Academic Rookie Team and competed in all 12 games. He handled all long-snapping duties for punts and was perfect on all his snaps. He finished his college career with many accolades including First-Team All-Big 12 (2018, 2019), Mannelly Award Finalist (2019), Reese’s Senior Bowl (2019), Second-Team Academic All-Big 12 (2018), First Team Academic All-Big 12 (2017, 2019), Third-Team All-Big 12 – Phil Steele (2017), Dury Moss Outstanding Co-Newcomer of the Year (2016), Big 12 Academic All-Rookie Team (2016). He signed to the Detroit Lions on April 25, 2020. After a year in Detroit, he signed to the Rams on February 2, 2021.
